Ray Pfeifer: A 9/11 Hero’s Legacy of Courage, Advocacy, and Service

Ray Pfeifer’s story is one of extraordinary bravery, selflessness, and unwavering dedication to his fellow first responders. A New York City firefighter (FDNY) for over 27 years, Pfeifer responded to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, spending months at Ground Zero assisting in search, rescue, and recovery efforts. Years later, he became a tireless advocate for 9/11 first responders battling illnesses caused by exposure to toxic debris, ensuring they received the medical support they deserved. Even after being diagnosed with terminal cancer linked to his time at Ground Zero, Pfeifer continued his fight for justice until his passing in 2017. His legacy remains an enduring testament to the resilience and sacrifice of those who answered the call on 9/11.

A Life of Service and Sacrifice

Born and raised in New York, Raymond J. Pfeifer dedicated his life to serving others. As a member of the FDNY, he displayed extraordinary bravery, but it was his actions following the 9/11 attacks that truly defined his heroism. Like thousands of first responders, Pfeifer spent months at Ground Zero in a desperate search for survivors and victims. The work was grueling, dangerous, and ultimately deadly, as responders were exposed to toxic dust and hazardous conditions.

Years later, Pfeifer developed stage 4 cancer, a direct result of his exposure at Ground Zero. Despite his illness, he refused to retreat from the fight. Instead, he used his voice to demand action for the thousands of first responders suffering from 9/11-related illnesses.

Championing the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund

Pfeifer played a critical role in securing healthcare benefits for fellow first responders. Recognizing that many of his colleagues were struggling to receive adequate medical care, he became a leading advocate for the extension of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, which provides medical care and financial support to responders and survivors affected by toxic exposure.

Despite battling his own illness, Pfeifer traveled repeatedly to Washington, D.C., using a wheelchair to lobby Congress. His relentless advocacy, alongside comedian Jon Stewart and other 9/11 responders, was instrumental in pressuring lawmakers to approve funding for the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (VCF). His efforts contributed to the law’s reauthorization in 2015, ensuring that thousands of responders would receive necessary medical treatment.

The Ray Pfeifer Foundation: Continuing His Mission

Following Pfeifer’s passing in 2017, his legacy lived on through the Ray Pfeifer Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting 9/11 first responders in need of medical equipment and financial assistance. Founded by Pfeifer’s friends and fellow firefighters, the foundation provides essential aid to those still battling illnesses related to 9/11 exposure.

The foundation’s mission is simple yet profound: to take care of the heroes who took care of others. It has helped countless responders access wheelchairs, home modifications, and other vital resources, carrying forward Pfeifer’s vision of ensuring no hero is left behind.

Honoring a True American Hero

Ray Pfeifer’s legacy is not just about his service as a firefighter but about his unbreakable spirit and commitment to others. His story serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by 9/11 first responders and the importance of ensuring they receive the care they need.

Pfeifer was posthumously honored by numerous organizations, including the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the FDNY, recognizing his heroism both in the line of duty and in the halls of Congress. His name is forever etched among those who gave everything to protect their fellow citizens.

As we reflect on his contributions, we honor Ray Pfeifer not only for his bravery on September 11, 2001, but for his tireless fight in the years that followed. His life’s work continues to inspire, reminding us of the power of resilience, advocacy, and unwavering service to others.
