Launched in 1931, the John J. Harvey was a pioneering fireboat for the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). Named after FDNY pilot John J. Harvey, who died in the line of duty in 1930, it was the first fireboat powered by internal combustion engines, allowing it to pump water and maneuver simultaneously—a significant advancement over its steam-powered predecessors. At 130 feet long and 268 gross tons, the Harvey was capable of pumping up to 18,000 gallons of water per minute, making it one of the most powerful fireboats of its time.
Throughout its service, the John J. Harvey responded to several notable incidents, including the Cunard Line pier fire in 1932, the burning of the SS Normandie in 1942, and a fire aboard the ammunition ship El Estero during World War II. After more than six decades of service, the fireboat was retired in 1994.
In 1999, a group of maritime enthusiasts and preservationists purchased the decommissioned vessel, restoring it to operational condition as a museum and educational platform. Moored at Pier 66a in Hudson River Park, the John J. Harvey offers free public trips, allowing visitors to experience a piece of New York’s maritime history firsthand.
The fireboat’s legacy was further cemented during the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Upon learning of the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Harvey’s crew volunteered to assist. Reactivated by the FDNY as Marine Company 2, the vessel, alongside other fireboats, pumped water for 80 continuous hours to support firefighting efforts until the city’s water mains were restored.
Today, the John J. Harvey stands as a testament to innovation, bravery, and community spirit. Its transformation from a state-of-the-art firefighting vessel to a cherished historical artifact underscores the enduring importance of preserving maritime heritage.
