Sergeant Major Tony Rose: A Pentagon Hero on 9/11

On the morning of September 11, 2001, U.S. Army Sergeant Major Tony Rose was working inside the Pentagon when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the building. The explosion from the impact hurled him across his office. Though badly injured—with embedded glass, a dislocated shoulder, and a busted knee—Rose did not hesitate. Despite the fire and smoke engulfing the corridors, he re-entered the burning building multiple times to rescue his fellow soldiers and civilians.

Over the course of those critical minutes, Rose is credited with saving at least seven lives. He held open blazing fire doors so others could escape and crawled through shattered openings in the Pentagon’s first floor to free those trapped beneath debris. His bravery under unimaginable conditions exemplified the highest standards of military service.

For his heroic actions, Sergeant Major Rose was awarded the Purple Heart and the Soldier’s Medal, which honors acts of heroism outside of combat. His official citations recognized his extraordinary courage and devotion to duty, even while gravely injured himself.

After the attacks, Rose continued his service for two more years. In the years that followed, he earned a master’s degree in psychology and became a therapist, focusing on trauma and PTSD—especially among children. His firsthand experience with catastrophic trauma uniquely positioned him to help others heal.

In 2018, Rose participated in pre-trial hearings at Guantanamo Bay, bearing witness to the proceedings against alleged 9/11 conspirators. His presence there served as a reminder of the human cost of that tragic day and the enduring strength of those who lived through it.

Tony Rose’s story is one of quiet heroism and unwavering commitment. From risking his life to save others in the Pentagon to dedicating his post-service career to mental health, his legacy is a testament to courage, compassion, and resilience.
