September 11: The Bravery and Sacrifice of FDNY Heroes
Chris Ganci, the son of FDNY Chief of Department Peter J. Ganci Jr.—the highest‑ranking uniformed member of the New York City Fire Department to die on 9/11—has followed in his father’s footsteps. After initially pursuing a business career post-graduation from Cornell, the tragic loss of his father on September 11, 2001, changed the course of his life.
A Career Reborn
In the wake of attending his father’s funeral and witnessing the impact of his loss, Chris Ganci abandoned the private sector to join the FDNY, determined to carry forward his father’s dedication and bravery.
Driven by his father’s example, Chris rose through the ranks, eventually earning the role of Battalion Chief—a rank that allows him to shape and lead with the same selfless spirit his father embodied.
Carrying On a Legacy
Peter Ganci Jr. was renowned for his courage. On 9/11, he directed rescue operations at Ground Zero, famously refusing to evacuate, declaring, “I’m not leaving my men,” even when the North Tower showed signs of imminent collapse . He died while leading from the front at age 54. The trauma of his loss hit Chris hard—he vividly recalls the moment he was told of his father’s death:
“I remember the scream that she let out…The pain of the realization that he’s never walking back in the door.”
Yet he soon found purpose in his pain, saying he aspired to build the same sense of pride and camaraderie his father instilled in the FDNY:
“You will never, ever be rich. But you will always be happy.”
The Impact Today
As Battalion Chief, Chris Ganci not only leads firefighting operations but also serves as a living tribute to his father’s example. His journey resonates deeply in a department where the children of 9/11 heroes have kept serving—more than 60 of them have joined the FDNY .
In speeches and public appearances, Chris has emphasized his father’s influence:
“He turned back and went right into the breach…Do I have that kind of mettle?” And he did.
A Legacy of Strength & Pride
Chris’s commitment to the FDNY proves that his father’s legacy lives on—in shape, valor, and everyday duty. As part of a new generation of firefighters shaped by tragedy and dedication, he embodies the strength, courage, and selflessness that defined Peter Ganci’s life. Through his leadership, Chris ensures that his father’s courage continues to blaze brightly across New York City.
