I was in the Air Force Reserve flying C-141’s and working for United Airlines as a fairly new first officer. When 9/11 occurred my unit was immediately alerted to generate six crews. I volunteered immediately and subsequently flew the Los Angeles County FD urban Search and Rescue team plus their equipment to McGuire AFB NJ, just south of NY City. As one of the few airplanes flying that night we flew into McGuire as the sun rose in the East. The smoke from the burning buildings was clearly visible. Quite an impression. I was pissed and spent the next 13 years on active duty flying missions into and out of Afghanistan and Iraq. Hell of a day. Changed everything.
