William Rodriguez, a janitor at the World Trade Center (WTC), played a pivotal role during the September 11, 2001, attacks by using his master key to aid in the evacuation of numerous individuals from the North Tower.
Heroic Actions on 9/11
On the morning of September 11, Rodriguez was in the basement of the North Tower when American Airlines Flight 11 struck the building. He reported hearing a loud explosion from below before the plane’s impact, a detail he later shared with investigators. Holding one of the few master keys to the building’s stairwells, Rodriguez unlocked doors as he ascended the tower with firefighters, facilitating the escape of many trapped occupants. His efforts are credited with saving numerous lives.
Recognition and Advocacy
For his bravery, Rodriguez received several accolades, including the National Hero Award from the Senate of Puerto Rico. He also founded the Hispanic Victims Group to support Latino families affected by the tragedy.
Post-9/11 Activities
Following the attacks, Rodriguez became an advocate for 9/11 survivors and victims’ families. He testified before the 9/11 Commission, expressing concerns about explosions he perceived in the building’s basement prior to the plane’s impact. Rodriguez has since traveled internationally, sharing his experiences and calling for further investigation into the events of that day.
